Donate a Toy to the SC Velo Toy Drive

San Dimas, California (December 5, 2017) – The Southern California Velo Cycling Club (SC Velo) and Incycle Bicycle Stores are sponsoring a Christmas Toy Collection Drive which began on Friday November 24th and will conclude on Saturday December 16th.  A Toy Ride will be held on Sunday, December 17th to take the collected toys to the San Dimas Sheriff’s station so that they can be distributed to needy families.  Everyone is invited to join with SC Velo and Incycle to support this worthy cause by donating toys and/or participating in the Toy Ride.

New unwrapped toys can be left in collection bins at  Incycle Bicycle Stores in San Dimas, Chino, Pasadena, and Rancho Cucamonga ( see: http://incycle.com ) between now and December 16th.

The SC Velo Toy Ride will depart from the San Dimas Incycle store on Sunday, December 17th at about 9:00 AM for an easy, no-drop, 1 hour+ ride to the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station to turn the collected toys over to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department representatives.

All toys collected as part of this drive will be delivered to kids of needy families by deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas station.  Last year, the San Dimas station was able to help a large number of families during the Christmas holiday because of our Toy Drive.

GMR is closed due to Red Flag warnings. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is allowed.

Saturday, November 25, 2017

It's been a Thanksgiving weekend of gorgeous rides sandwiched in between parent care activities. The mountain provides respite and distance from those responsibilities. Sometimes not enough.

Saturday, November 4, 2017

It was briskly autumn today the last day before standard time. Cool as if the breeze had thoughts of snow on of the mountain. Plenty of traffic motoring today. Warming up the muscles and joints took longer this morning. Thought I recognized Scott P. Racing past the shed. Got to chat with Chuck who climbed 14,000 feet this week.

Last evening ride before the time change. Having used the elliptical machine on Monday, my legs were screaming what's this bicycle motion going on. It was a pretty ride and my time was good just under my "baseline" time.

Saturday Ride

Mt. Baldy loomed large above the shed as Matt and I climbed the final ascent. My inner monologue didn't hold back, "Glendora Mountain Road rivals epic European rides." Another cyclist at my side quipped, "GMR is better than European rides. It's warmer and its only March!" Indeed it was splendid weather. warm, sunny a spring/summer day. Bill had launched earlier and waited for us at the shed. I am so glad to be alive and exercising.

The weather today was brisk and pleasant. Everyone flocked to the rode. Mike and Shawn were two riders enjoying the outdoors. Mike let mention he rode Leadville 100 two years in a row. A mountain bike race in Colorado with elevations ranging from 9000 to 12000 feet of altitude. Leadville tests your fortitude and your lungs. Coming down to Twin Lakes you can feel your body expand from the oxygen. Great to meet you.

Windy Everywhere

The winds were strong today and every curve provided new challenges to the soul. The desire to stop and turn tail popped into my head a dozen times. It was an incredible ride. Bill captured Glendora Mountain with the snow capped peaks blown about by Santa Ana winds.

The forest department is watching a demonstration of a new weed cutter that goes along the road. It was way up past Newman's on that back of a truck when I saw it

2017 San Dimas Stage Race Registration Opens

Registration for the 18th annual San Dimas Stage Race (SDSR), scheduled for March 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2017, is now open at BikeReg.com ( https://www.bikereg.com/Net/san-dimas-stage-race ). World class professional, talented amateur, and Junior cyclists from around the world are signing up to compete in this highly regarded race which is hosted by the SC Velo Cycling Club. Three exciting stages of racing are scheduled as well as Kids Races on the last day. 800+ professional and amateur cyclists are expected to compete for cash prizes and medals.
This year’s SDSR is part of USA Cycling’s new American Road Calendar (ARC). In keeping with ARC requirements, the podium cash awards for the Men’s and Women’s Pro categories have been equalized. For our Junior racers, the SDSR will again serve as USA Cycling Juniors National ID race, and it will also be part of the Junior DEVO race series.

Stage 1 consists of individual time trials on a 4.25 mile course that winds up Glendora Mountain Road. This stage, sponsored by Main Street Garage, is an individual all out effort by the riders to get the best time up the steepest parts of Glendora Mountain Road. With the size of the field, it will be a long day of racing, with the first rider starting at 8:00 AM and the last one going out in the late afternoon, the exact time being dependent on the number of riders.

Stage 2 will be a Road Race around Bonelli Park sponsored by San Dimas Community Hospital ( http://www.sandimashospital.com ). The course is a 7 mile rolling and twisting circuit which includes short climbs. The riders will make from 4 to 12 loops around the course depending upon category. The first group starts at 7:50 AM and the last (Pro men) at 1:15 PM. A special viewing area for the race is being planned inside the Park at Heckler Hill, details will be posted on the SDSR web site and Facebook page as soon as they are finalized.

Stage 3 is a Criterium around the streets of Old Town San Dimas sponsored by Incycle bike stores ( http://incycle.com ) and Cannondale bikes ( http://cannondale.com ). The racers will ride quick loops around a tight, 1.2 mile circuit with 6 sharp corners, for times varying from 35 to85 minutes depending upon their category. The first group will start at 7:00 AM and the last group will start at 3:05 PM. For spectators, this will be a fast and up-close race, with lots of good viewing spots around the tree lined course.

The Kids Races will be a fun event held on Sunday, March 26th, at 12:30 PM in downtown San Dimas. Sponsored by AW Professional Landscaping, the races are free to all children, so get your kids’ bikes out and ready to ride. Please note that helmets are mandatory. Registration for the Kids Races will be held on-site in San Dimas on Sunday morning.

All of these events offer great opportunities for participation by cyclists of all levels, as well as wonderful viewing for cycling fans. There are no fees for spectators, just pick a spot along the race route and be prepared to see some exciting racing. For the photographically inclined, the photo-ops will be unparalleled, with lots of up-close action, so bring your cameras. For the safety of our riders and spectators, no drones will be allowed.

Please visit http://sdsr.bike for more information about the race, registration, and lodging. Information about SC Velo can be found at http://scvelo.bike Registration is currently open for all categories at BikeReg.com.
