I took a gamble on weather, road and traffic this afternoon and ventured out in the afternoon clouds for a short ride. The weather was moist yet surprising dry. The road was in decent shape and the traffic was light for a Saturday afternoon. A few cyclists passed me headed down as I headed up. Performance wise it was a decent ride not fast, not slow. A few seconds better than the March 2016 "baseline".
On my way down, I stopped for two cyclists mending a trashed tire. Byron had a blow out on the descent and rode on his rims for a distance. He and Toby shaved the rims and attempted a repair on Byron's tire with a 12 inch slit. I offered tire boots to help patch the tire. Putting air in the tire and wrapping the tire with lengths of tube, the tube still found spots to bulge out. The hope of riding down vanished. It was time to call triple "AAA". Bill drove the Ford Edge and provided Byron a ride to his car. It was quite an adventure.
Annette the savior!! Thank you, not only for stopping to help but for calling in the cavalry :) Big thanks to Bill, too! The cycling community is terrific.
ReplyDeleteIt should be noted that while we ended up on the GMR Wall of Shame, points should be earned for being willing to test creative ways for salvaging a blow out. I have since thought of other (better) ways, but will hopefully never need said newly acquired skill-set...
Nice job on the blog and look forward to crossing paths again on lighter terms! :)
