Woman beaten, robbed along San Gabriel Canyon Road

Forest Alert: robbery along the San Gabriel Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest.

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST : Two men beat and robbed a woman Saturday as she was stopped along San Gabriel Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest north of Glendora to take pictures of the scenery, authorities said. The violent robbery took place about 11 a.m. near mile marker 19 of San Gabriel Canyon Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Elisabeth Sachs said.

A woman in her mid-20s parked her car and was taking photographs over the roadside when she saw to men approach her car, the lieutenant said. The woman confronted the men, who attacked. “They struck her with their fists and kicked her with their feet,” Sachs said.

The victim fought back but was overpowered by her two attackers.

The robbers then rifled the woman’s pockets and fled with a small amount of money and other personal items.
The woman suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries, Sachs said.
Both robbers were described as young Latino men between 16 and 20 years old. One stood about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 150 to 170 pounds, with short black hair and clean-shaven, Sachs said. He wore a red short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.
His accomplice stood 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 240 to 260 pounds, with black hair grown long on top, also clean-shaven, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and black shoes.
The attackers fled in two separate vehicles, Sachs said. One was a 1990s-model four-door Honda, and the other was a gray, four-door Saturn hatchback.
Anyone with information can reach the sheriff’s San Dimas Station at 909-450-2700. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Teen loses life on GMR

We are saddened by the events that led to the death of a teenager set to graduate from high school. Tragic. The memorial on the roadside demonstrated the pang of loss.

On a happier note, a cyclist spied Bill with his camera at Newman's point today and requested a photo. On an instant Bill captured his image. Who are you?

More biking. Less Cleaning

In the quest to get from here to there some riders miss out on the vistas along the way. Picked up Matt and Len at the top of Monroe and rode out on Glendora Ridge Road to Fork Plus Four. The forest was at its best beneath blue skies and fat white clouds. It was a bit cooler than expected and the stop was good to warm up. Greg and Rick were returning from the village wearing multiple layers, providing real time experience on the chilliness of the descent. Greg is a super hero. He has triumphed over four melanoma surgeries and survived a staph infection. He relearned how to walk from the hospital stay and it is truly amazing to see him on the bike.
Matt and Len looked out at Baldy from Glendora Ridge Road Fork plus Four.
Rick has a keen sense of humor and wit.
Met up with Mark at the shed. It was a 30 mile ride with lots of catching up with friends. More time on the bike meant less time for cleaning and a need to recover.

They filmed a Lexus commercial on Gmr on Monday 5/16/2016. this is how they made it look like it is raining.

Monday the road was closed. It was grey and overcast. Pedaling indoors watching the Tour of California was an easy alternative. The intervals threw me a curve ball. It was harder than I expected. The indoor ride made the Wednesday evening outdoor ride with Heather and Joan enjoyable. The weather was warm. The clouds sparse. The small twingy pain in a ham string reminded me to go slow. No pushing. Hang with the friends and enjoy the scenery.

Glendora Mountain Road Closed 5/16/2016 4 am - 11 pm

Glendora Mountain Road Closed 5/16/2016 4 am - 11 pm. The portable electronic sign blared the message Road Closed for Monday. Be advised.

Saturday we climbed out of the marine layer to the wall near the top of the Monroe Truck Trail on Glendora Mountain Road. The bugs were resting after their Friday Food Fest they had on my legs. Len. Joan. Matt. Bill. The view is of Little Dalton Canyon with the infamous shed to the right of the picture.

Ken set an excellent pace up the hill. Stories of Riding his mountain bike up Poop Out, Sunset Ridge, Monrovia to Rincon and the flatlands of Orange County filled my mind. He asked after Bill and Matt. Retired folks choose when they ride during the day. Us working stiffs squeeze it in when we can. Ken's pace paid off. We turned around at the yellow box where the rocks were all over the road. New best even including the wait time. Or a whole minute better without the wait time. Yippee.

Joan and I spotted Ron this evening. He circled around and chatted until First Colby hairpin. Ron was having a good day. Auto traffic was busier than Saturday afternoon. My time was better than the baseline.

Saturday afternoon

I took a gamble on weather, road and traffic this afternoon and ventured out in the afternoon clouds for a short ride. The weather was moist yet surprising dry. The road was in decent shape and the traffic was light for a Saturday afternoon. A few cyclists passed me headed down as I headed up. Performance wise it was a decent ride not fast, not slow. A few seconds better than the March 2016 "baseline".

On my way down, I stopped for two cyclists mending a trashed tire. Byron had a blow out on the descent and rode on his rims for a distance. He and Toby shaved the rims and attempted a repair on Byron's tire with a 12 inch slit. I offered tire boots to help patch the tire. Putting air in the tire and wrapping the tire with lengths of tube, the tube still found spots to bulge out.  The hope of riding down vanished. It was time to call triple "AAA". Bill drove the Ford Edge and provided Byron a ride to his car. It was quite an adventure.

The GMR Challenge TT is June 4th. Details are here

Wednesday night ride. I wanted to see if my fast ride last week ride was an anomaly. The wind was strong at the Colby turns and windy tunnel. My intervals were up and down. A long stop for traffic on Sierra Madre and a slow ascent by the fire station. I was momentarily disappointed when I hit the lap counter then I realized that I smashed last weeks record by 50 seconds. A total of 1:26 better than 2015's best. Happy.

Monday Night Tide with Heather, Joan and happy clouds
