Today's ride was rich with many threads and vignettes of stories. The first most important was the heat. Bill and I started out at 7 am in the morning to ride before the heat turned us back. Pretty easy to set goals of new distances in the nicely hydrated state of the air-conditioned house. Quite another to sizzle and swelter all the way up the road. As soon as I turned into the Sun after Newmann's, my ear alerted me to the fact I hadn't gotten sunscreen on all the necessary tender pink parts.
As I stood at the shed, several riders zoomed by asking for water at the shed. No water at the shed. Bring your bottles, and extras filled with ice chilled water.

GMR Reunion
Flashback to Monday February 7, 2011. Matt had taken a rare Monday off to ride up GMR. On his way back from the shed, he encountered a rescue team at mile marker 8.8. A young man of 22 years old from Diamond Bar/Walnut lost control of his mountain biker and fell down the steep terrain. Then miracles started happening. He had his cell phone after the fall. The phone was still working. He was able to type a message. Luckier still the message was sent. The search and rescue team airlifted him out and he survived.
Fast forward to a week ago when the mountain biker needed his first and last farewell to the fateful site before heading off to Colorado. Amazing still Matt again, just happened to be there for the reunion. Good luck, dude. Safe journeys.
Check out the original ABC video of the air rescue.

Road Construction
Road construction will be beginning soon at mile marker 8.9 to put in a retaining wall to reinforce the hillside and to protect and preserve the road. Once it begins it will be 60 days with a one lane access (See page 10) flagging, stopping and waiting. Enjoy the flow while you can.
